Construction crews began work this week on the long-awaited restoration of the historic Tower Theatre, a beloved Art Deco landmark that has stood vacant in downtown Roseville since 2018.

The $8 million project will transform the 1946 movie palace into a modern performing arts venue while preserving its architectural heritage. The restoration is funded through a combination of city redevelopment funds, state historic preservation grants, and private donations raised by the nonprofit Roseville Arts Foundation.

The project has been a community priority for years, with residents expressing strong support for preserving the theater's distinctive neon tower sign and ornate interior details. Architects have designed the renovation to maintain the theater's vintage charm while adding modern amenities including updated seating, improved acoustics, backstage facilities, and ADA accessibility.

The 650-seat venue will host live theater productions, concerts, film screenings, and community events when it reopens in spring 2027. 'This theater represents Roseville's cultural heart,' said Arts Foundation President Jennifer Martinez.

'Generations of families have memories here, and we're ensuring future generations can create their own.' The restoration includes rebuilding the original marquee, refurbishing the terrazzo floors, and restoring hand-painted murals that have been hidden behind decades of modifications. Local historians are consulting on the project to ensure historical accuracy throughout the renovation process.
